magnifying glass

Picture

mill and lathe work

I hand-fabricated this magnifying glass on a metal mill and lathe. The entire assembly consists of the following components:
  • Brass ring (turned)
  • Brass lug (machined)
  • Delrin handle (turned)
  • Polycarbonate lens (turned)
The brass lug and ring were brazed together using a MIG welder. The delrin handle threads into the brass lug-ring assembly. The threads on the handle were cut on the lathe.

Brass ring

The ring was turned down from brass round stock. I cut the outer diameter cut first, and then bored out the inner diameter. I also cut a small groove on the interior surface of the ring to hold the polycarbonate lens.

Brass Lug

The lug was milled from brass bar stock and hand-tapped for assembly with the delrin handle. Other processes include boring and milling angled sides.

Delrin Handle

The handle was turned from delrin round stock. One end was machine threaded using the lathe's auto-feed.

silver brazing

The ring and lug were silver-brazed together with an oxyacetylene torch.
